Process description

Blow moulding is either a continuous or a discontinuous, multi-stage manufacturing process for producing hollow thin walled parts from thermoplastic plastic materials.

Typical end products:

High volume end-consumer products. For example: bottles and containers. It is a part manufacturing process and is not based on lot sizes i.e. weight.

Processes

The two main types are extrusion or injection blow moulding.
The raw material is fed into a heated barrel, and with screw is mixed and either extruded or injected to form a tube-like piece of plastic called a parison. The parison is then clamped into a mould air is then introduced so blowing the plastic out to match the mould. Once the plastic has cooled and hardened the mould opens and the part is ejected.

Typical materials being processed

Most raw and compounded polymers in granular form. In addition regrind materials and additives.
